Every social platform crops header images differently, and most of them crop again on mobile. The result is a banner that looks composed on a desktop preview and decapitates your own text on a phone. The fix is not a single "social banner" size but a deliberate crop per platform, with the important content kept away from the edges that get eaten.
How This Local-First Tool Works
- Keep anything that must be readable — a name, a tagline, a face — inside the middle band of the image. That region survives on every platform; the outer edges do not.
- LinkedIn overlays your profile photo onto the lower-left of a personal banner, so that corner is unusable for content no matter how good it looks in isolation.
- Mobile crops are more aggressive than desktop. If the banner reads on a phone it will read on a laptop, so check the smaller case first rather than last.
- Export at the platform dimensions rather than uploading an oversized file and letting the platform resize it. Their automatic resampling is optimised for file size, not for keeping your text crisp.

- Why does my banner look wrong on mobile?
- Because mobile layouts crop the same image more tightly, usually from the sides. Content that sat comfortably near the left or right edge on desktop falls outside the visible area. Move anything essential toward the centre and re-check.
- Can I use one image everywhere?
- You can use one design, but not one file. The aspect ratios differ enough that a single export will be letterboxed or cropped somewhere. Producing a correct crop per platform from the same artwork takes seconds and avoids the problem entirely.
- What should actually go in a freelance banner?
- What you do and who for, in as few words as possible. A header is glanced at, not read — "Brand identity for D2C food businesses" communicates more than an abstract graphic, and it is the line that survives being shrunk into a mobile viewport.
- Is my image uploaded to a server?
- No. Cropping and re-encoding run in your browser through the Canvas API, so unreleased branding stays on your device.
