Most image compression is done against an arbitrary ceiling — a portal that rejects anything over 2MB, an email that bounces, a page that loads slowly on a phone. The useful skill is knowing which lever to pull, because resizing and re-encoding solve different problems and applying the wrong one produces a file that is both large and ugly. This compressor gives you explicit control over quality, format and dimensions, and runs entirely in your browser.
How This Local-First Tool Works
- Reducing dimensions is almost always the bigger win. An image displayed at 800px wide gains nothing from being 4000px wide, and halving both dimensions removes roughly three quarters of the pixels before any quality setting is touched.
- Quality settings are non-linear. Dropping a JPEG from 100 to about 80 typically removes most of the file size and is close to invisible; going from 80 to 60 saves comparatively little and starts to show around edges and gradients.
- Format matters more than either. Photographs belong in JPEG or WebP; flat graphics, screenshots and anything with text or sharp edges belong in PNG, where JPEG artefacts are conspicuous.
- Compression is one-way. Re-compressing an already-compressed JPEG compounds the loss, so always work from the highest-quality original you have rather than from a file that has been through the process before.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I get an image under 100KB without it looking bad?
- Resize first, compress second. Set the dimensions to what will actually be displayed, then reduce quality gradually and watch the preview. A 1200px-wide photograph at around 75% JPEG quality usually lands well under 100KB and looks unchanged at normal viewing size.
- Should I use JPEG, PNG or WebP?
- JPEG for photographs where the file goes to a client or a form that may not accept newer formats. WebP for the web, where it beats JPEG at the same visual quality. PNG for logos, screenshots, and anything containing text or transparency, where lossy compression is visibly wrong.
- Are my images uploaded anywhere?
- No. Decoding, resizing and re-encoding all happen in your browser via the Canvas API. This matters when the image is unreleased client work, a product shot under embargo, or anything else you would not post publicly.
- Why did compressing my screenshot make it look blurry?
- Because it was almost certainly saved as JPEG. JPEG is designed for photographs and handles the sharp edges of text and UI elements badly, producing visible fringing. Save screenshots as PNG and reduce the dimensions instead if you need a smaller file.
